This sliding barn door was a particularly interest

This sliding barn door was a particularly interesting commission. What you see here is the end result of a lot of creative problem solving.

My client’s tiny basement bathroom originally had a traditional hinged door. It swung inward, which meant you had to step nearly into the shower to get the door closed again.

A sliding barn door was an obvious solution, but the house has a lovely, and very cohesive aesthetic. Every door is exactly the same. The trim too. Everything is very put together. A random new door would stick out like a sore thumb. So I built a second frame around the old door, in the shape of the existing trim.

It’s clearly a new insulation, but with enough of the old aesthetic to look right at home. And the little basement bathroom feels way less cramped.

I’ve been making these Scandinavian style foot stools for a long time. They were one of my original products at Enger Grove— from way back when I was a full time journalist, as well as a full time woodworker.

Every so often, I make a batch of half a dozen or so foot stools, with whatever wood I have in abundance at the time, list them in my website and forget about them until they all sell out and I need another batch.

This stool is the last of seven identical pieces. It’s straight grained quarter sawn ash, with walnut pegs making a nice visual highlight. It’s for sale right now on engergrove.com/shop.

When it sells, as always, I’ll make some more.

The first four recipe boxes are all buffed up with @odiesoil and ready to ship out. I did notice, while lining them all up, that I ended up with a perfectly continuous grain pattern across the front faces. I do that kind of thing on purpose when building desk drawers or cabinet doors, and it’s always futsy and hard not to get one panel turned around. And then I go and accidentally nail the flowing grain on four objects that will never be in the same room again.

My most recent timber frame, built on a massive hill in upstate New York, has gotten a nice new skin of charred wood.

I always love getting updates on the frames I build. David at @earthdancefarmny was kind enough to send me these lovely shots. The frame has one of the best views available. And is shaping up to be a building worthy of its gorgeous surroundings. The charred cladding is sharp as can be, and the stone patio is expertly crafted— to say nothing of the timber frame inside, which I’m quite partial to. Next summer David tells me he’ll be installing a green, living roof. I can’t wait to see that. It’ll look like an ancient Icelandic farmhouse! A deeply compelling thought!
